The Whale Song
I have written a play that contains a lot of sentiment from my childhood and early adolescence, and my early adolescence was the time before and after the millennium. My summers were spent in a seaside resort town, there was no Lifeline or Beverly Hills 90210, there was lots and lots of radio before falling asleep, sunsets and sunrises, salt-bleached hair stuck together in dreadlocks and attempts to wash it out in water that had to be brought from a well.
But the main character of the play, Wendell, is not me, just as the events he experiences are not my events. But the questions and problems he solves are mine. Ours! Humanity has left the environment around us in a bottomless pit, young people are standing up for animals and trees, because they understand how alarmingly fast everything living around us is dying out and disappearing. But even then, in the distant 90s, there were young people who were disturbed by what they saw at the sea and the older generation's ignorance towards the dying creatures of the sea and river. Laura was also like that, meeting whom changed Wendel's whole world.
